Locked out: what to do? Stay calm and act smart

First, take a breath: a slammed door is annoying but can almost always be opened quickly and without damage. These steps help you avoid unnecessary costs.
1. Check alternatives before you call
Is there a spare key with neighbours, family or the property manager? Can a window or balcony door be reached safely? Renters can also ask the property management outside night hours, some keep spare keys.
2. Test the locksmith on the phone
A reputable service quotes a fixed price or at least a clear range on the phone, including callout and surcharges. Ask directly: "What does the door opening cost right now, all included?" Evasive answers like "we'll see on site" are a red flag.
Describe the situation precisely: a door that just slammed shut is much cheaper to open than a locked one. With us, the fixed price is confirmed in writing before work starts.
3. On site: price first, then tools
Only let work begin once the price is confirmed in writing. A professional opens a slammed door in minutes without damage, drilling is rarely necessary and should be discussed with you first.
Never pay in advance, and always ask for an invoice with a company address.
